Philadelphia

Yesterday I had a good flight from Minneapolis to Philadelphia. There was one hour delay, because the plane was broken. But they quickly found a new plane and that brought me in about 2 hours to Philadelphia. Hannah was waiting for me at the airport, together with Edward, her friend. From the airport is was about 30 minute drive to hannahs house, in WIlmington. She has an appartment on the 7th floor of an appartment complex, nice view, and I´ve already seen the first squirles. It´s starting to become spring here, at least no snow, so far. It is cold thoug, i'm happy i brought my gloves.

Today we are going to Washington DC. We´ll start with taking a look at the biggest R.K. Church in the western hemisphere. We will see the whitehouse, and probably a lot more things. It will be a busy day, and i'll probably have some pictures to show by the end of the day.

Gister had ik een goede vlucht van Minneapolis naar Philadelphia. Ik had alleen wel een uur vertraging omdat het vliegtuig kapot was. Maaar ze hadden gelukkig snel een nieuw vliegtuig gevonden en dat bracht me in 2 uur naar Philadelphia. Hannah stond op mij te wachten op het vliegveld, samen met Edward, haar vriend. Vanaf het vliegveld was het nog ongeveer 30 minuten naar hannahs huis in Wilmington. Ze woont in een appartement op de 7de verdieping, met een mooi uitzicht, en ik hed de eerste eekhoorns al gezien. De lente begint zich hier te tonen, er is in iedergeval geen sneeuw, tot nu toen. MAar het is wel koud, dus ik ben blij dat ik mijn hadschoenen bij me heb.

Vandaag gaan we naar Washington DC. We beginnen met een bezoek aan de grootste R.K Kerk op het westelijk halfrond. Daarna gaan we naar het Witte huis, en waarschijnlijk nog veel meer dingen.Het zal een drukke dag worden, maar ik heb waarschijnlijk wel wat mooie foto's aan het eind van de dag.

Vacation, Vakantie

Now I officially have vacation !!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

Yesterday everything went a lot smoother compared to the day before, but still it could have been much better. Because the hospital was also moving to an electronic patient dossier that day, nobody had a lot of time for us. And everything had to be done quickly. So I was trying to start with giving a training when they IT guys finally show up with the missing monitors. And now those had to be installed first. And I because of that I had to give the training on a PC that didn't have all the right versions of the software yet. As a result of all that the dr. becomes frustrate that everything doesn't go smooth enough.

The TeraRecon software is new to the doctors, although they had a demo system that they never worked with. This doctor also wanted a training in using terarecon, but the guy doing the installation can't give trainings. He is an application specialist, and knows all about the software but can't train. So I tried to explain to the doctor how to use the software, but I can't show them much, because all I know is the little part on how to use it to get to our software, not all the other functionalities.

But in the end we were done at 3 pm at the University, and we went to Southdale. Because we had worked out all the bugs and I did the installations there on tuesday we were done in 30 minutes.

Now getting ready for my flight to Philadelhia, and my vacation has offically started.

Gister ging alles een stuk beter dan de dag ervoor, maar nog steeds niet optimaal. Het ziekenhuis ging op dezelfde dag ook over op een electronisch patrienten dossier, waardoor niemand tijd voor ons had. En als ze tijd hadden moest alles heel snel en bleven de piepers maar aandacht vragen. Op een gegven moment wou ik beginnen met het geven van een training, komen ze aan met de monitors die nog bezorgd zouden worden. Dus die moesten eerst geinstalleerd, en ik moest de training geven op een systeem dat nog niet alle juist versies van de software had. Dat is erg onhandig trainen, en ik kan de doktor ook niet vragen om een uurtje later langs te komen want dan heeft zij ook geen tijd.

De TeraRecon software is nieuw voor de artsen. Ze hebben wel een demo systeem staan, maar daar hebben ze natuurlijk nooit mee gewerkt. Dus eiste ze ook een training voor de terarecon software. Maar de field engineer van Terarecon kan geen training geven. Hij is een applicatie specialist, en kent de software wel, maar heeft geen idee hoe artsen dit gebruiken. Dus ik heb geprobeerd om dan maar een klein beetje uitleggen, maar ik wist ook niet veel meer dan hoe start ik mijn software op via de terarecon software.

Maar uiteindelijk waren we rond 3 uur klaar op de universiteit, en gingen naar southdale. Daar waren we in 30 minuten klaar omdat we alle problemen al hadden weggewerkt op de universiteit en alle software had ik daar dinsdag al geinstalleerd.

Nu ga ik me voorbereiden op mijn vlucht naar philadelphia, en is mijn vakantie officieel begonnen.

Adventures at the University, Avonturen in de universiteit

Yesterday I had an adventurous day. We had to go the hospital of the University of Minnesota. Robert asked me if I had the address, and I didn't have that. He had contacted the project manager about the addresses before so I thought he would have it. Well he remembered an address and was pretty sure it was the right one, and we went there. It was snowing all the time and we even had problems getting up the ramp of the parking lot to get away from the hotel. We had to stop almost at the top, reverse down the ramp, down to the second one and use that so we would have enough speed to get to the top. Good thing I’m not driving and they are used to the snow. Everything was very slippery, but we got to the building safely. Robert was convinced it was the right place, because he remembered it, although it looked a bit different because of the snow.. Once we got inside it seemed we were on the wrong campus, and in the wrong building. We had to get to the campus on the other side of the Mississippi. We got the right address from somebody, and went to the right building. We arrived around 9:30 am and went straight to the department were we had to do the install. They didn't know we were coming and send us back to the front desk to get badges and a kind of security clearance. The front desk couldn't find us in the system, and told us to go down to supply chain management to get registered there first. Apparently this is something very normal in American hospitals, but I have never seen something like this in Europe. We first tried to call all the people on our contact list. They were all not on site, because they thought everything was delayed. And we thought the project manager would have told them we were coming. After 30 minutes of trying to get a hold of someone, we finally found somebody that would come back to the campus soon. This was Dave, he works for PACS/IT. But we still had to get the security clearance, so off to find supply chain. They were located somewhere far down and hidden, but we found them. They were surprised, because normally they don't get these requests from people that just come to install software. We don't have patient contact, so we don't need the clearance, apparently. But they made a note for us so the front desk would give us the stuff we needed so we could go to the department. Once we had the clearance we went to the front desk, got the cards we needed and went back to the department. Robert had gone to the research division by know to show them the software. When Matthew and I arrived back at the department nobody knew which systems had to be installed, so we had to wait until Dave would arrive on campus. Robert asked if we could come to research when we had some time to do the install there. So after sitting around a couple minutes we decided to go to research first, once we arrived there they wanted the software installed on one computer. But they researcher that needed it installed had to go to a meeting at that moment. So he showed me his computer to do the installation. At the same moment Dave gave us a call that he was back on the campus. We had to go back to the department, which was on the other side of the building off course. At the department it seemed that the computers we had to install on were missing... Dave went to find them and showed us two other pc's that might have to be installed. So we started on those and ran into problems, because they were not in the domain. We couldn't fix that, and send some emails to the Project manager to see what he could figure out. By now it was almost lunch time, so we first went for lunch while we were waiting for Dave to find the missing PC's. After lunch he had found them, but they were still in the box and had to be configured. And the other problem was that there were no monitors. Matthew and I went back to the department, around 1:30 pm, and I agreed with Matthew that I would go to research to install the software there and he would stay with Dave and do the installs. The install at research didn't go as smoothly as it should, because something was blocking the connection to the licenses. This was another IT problem, which the research guy had to solve with his IT department, so in the end I just did a temporary install and went back to the department. By now it was 4 pm and Matthew and Dave had installed and configured 2 out of the 3 missing PC's and were working on the last one. Terarecon was still behind schedule and we didn't have a chance to test the integration. So today we are going to meet the Terarecon guy at the University, test the integration, give the doctors a quick training, and repeat the whole thing at Southdale hospital. This should all be straight forward, but with all the adventures we had yesterday, I’m not sure about that.

Gister had ik een avontuurlijke dag. We moesten naar de University of Minnesota. Robert vroeg aan mij of ik een adres had, maar dat had ik niet. Hij had eerder al contact gehad met de project manager, dus ik da cht dat hij dit adres ook had. Robert meende zich het adres te herrinneren dus gingen we daar maar heen. We moesten eerst uit de parkeer garage van het hotel komen. Het was aan het sneeuwen, en de eerste keer kwamen we niet tot de top van de helling. De auto kwam niet verder en gleed een beetje terug. Dus in zijn achteruit, de helling af en ook een stukje van de tweede, zodat we genoeg snelheid zouden hebben om tot boven aan te komoen. Alle wegen zaten onder de sneeuw, maar we kwamen veilig aan op de plaats waar we moesten zijn. Toen we in de buurt kwamen, was Robert overtuigd dat het de juiste plaats was, omdat alle hem bekend voorkwam, het zag er alleen iets anders uit door de sneeuw. Wat bleek toen we eenmaal binnen waren: verkeerde gebebouw, zelfs verkeerde campus. We moesten naar de campus aan de andere kant van de mississippi. Robert kreeg van iemand het juiste adres en we gingen door sneeuw naar het juiste gebouw. Het was ongeveer half 10 toen we daar aankwamen en we gingen meteen naar de afdeling waar we moesten zijn. Daar wisten ze niet dat wij zouden komen en stuurde ons naar de informatie balie, om pasjes te halen. De info balie kon ons niet in het systeeem vinden enstuurde ons toen eerst naar supply chain management, om daar te zorgen dat w ein het system zouden komen. Matthew was gewent aan deze procedures, maar ik heb het nog nooit meegemaakt in Europa. We probeerde eerst maar eens om de mensen op onze contact lijst te bellen om te zien of een van hen ons mee kon nemen naar de afdeling. Er was niemand op deze campus of in het gebouw, want ze wisten niet dat we zouden komen.. Ik had ze geen email gestuurd dat we zouden komen, omdat ik dacht dat de project mamanger dat wel gedaan zou hebben. Na een hoop heen en weer gebel kregen hadden we uiteindelijk contact met Dave. Hij zou terug komen naar de campus om ons te komen helpen. Maar we moesten wel eerst nog pasjes regelen, dus op zoek naar supply chain. Die zaten natuurlijk in de verste uithoek van het gebouw en niemand wist waar, maar we hebben ze gevonden. Bij supply chain waren ze verrast dat ze ons naar daar gestuurd hadden, want normaal krijgen ze die vragen niet voor mensen die alleen maar software komen installeren en geen contact hebben met patienten. Ze schreven een briefje voor ons zodat we bij de info balie de pasjes zouden krijgen en gingen terug naar de afdeling. Robert was ondertussen naar de research afdeling gegaan omdat zij ook geinteresseerd waren in de software. Toen matthew en ik bij de afdeling teruug kwamen, wist niemand welke computers geinstalleerd moesten worden, dus moesten we wachten toddat Dave op de campus zou komen. Robert had gebvraagd of als ik tijd had ik ook nogf een computer bij research kon installeren. Toen we een tijdje hadden zitten wachten dachten we dat het beter zou zijn om eerst naar research te gaan en daar de installatie te doen. Maar de researcher moest naar en meeting en toonde me de computer. Op datzelfde moment belde Dave dat hij op de campus was, en dus moesten we weer terug naar de afdeling, aan de andere kant van het gebauw natuurlijk. Weere op de afdeling aangekomen bleek dat de computers die wew moesten installeren zoek waren. Dave zou ze gaan zoeken en toonde ons 2 andere computers die misschien de software ook moesten hebben. Dus begonnen we maar met die 2 systemen, maar daar liepen we al snel tegen problemen aan omdat ze niet in het juiste netwerk domein hingen. Wij konden dat niet oplossen, dus na wat heen en weer ge-email met de project manager zijn we maar gaan lunchen, terwijl we nog steeds aan het wachten waren todat Dave de vermiste computers gevonden had. Na de lunch had Dave de computers gevonden, maar ze zaten nog in de doos en moesten dus eerst geinstalleerd worden. En het andere probleem was dat beeldschermen nog niet waren bezorgd. Ik ben toen naar de research afdeling gegaan om daar de computer te installeren en Matthew heeft samen met Dave gewerkt om de computers te installeren en de software te configureren. Bij de research installatie ging alles ook niet helemaal vlotjes, want iets blokkeerde de connectie to de licensies. Dit moest IT van de researdch afdeling oplossen dus uiteindelij kheb ik daar tijdelijke licensies geinstalleerd en ben terug gegaan naar de afdeling. Ondertussen was het rond een uur of 4 ’s middags. Matthew en Dave hadden 2 van de 3 PC’s geinstalleerd en geconfigureerd en waren bezig met de laatste. Terarecon liep nog steeds achter op schema, dus de intergratie hadden we nog steeds niet kunnen testen. Vanddag hebben we een afspraak met terarecon om die intergratie te testen en de dokters te trainen. Eerst doen we dat bij de universiteit en daarna in Southdale. Dit zou allemaal heel makkelijk moeten, maar na de avonturen van gister ben ik daar niet zo zeker van...

Rain and Snow, regen en sneeuw

On Tuesday it rained almost the whole day. That shouldn't be a problem for somebody from the Netherlands. But if you add a strong wind and tempratures of around 4degrees Celcius, it's becomming a lot less comfertable. Ans especially if you know that in the Netherlands it's 15 degrees and spring. This night (it's 6:30 am now) it snowed. Everything is covered with a very nice layer of about 5 centimeters of snow. The inhabitant of Minneapolis think that is nothing, they are used to a lot more. Winter lasts from the beginning of November to the beginning of April. During this Period they have trouble with Traffic congestion, because of the weather. Between April and November all the roads need to be fixed, they are filled with potholes. So during that period they again have trouble with traffic congestion , but now due to the construction work. And all the roads are already 3 or 4 lanes wide. The cars here are just to big

. Despide the weather I am enjoying all the new impressions, and my work.

Last night I got a change to see something of downtown Minneapolis. We went for dinner at a Mexican restaurant. I haven't had a chance to see the Mississippi, which runs pretty close to the hotel. maybe i get a chance today or tomorrow.

My work went well yesterday, only the people of TeraRecon, the company we are integrating our software with in this particular project, are behind schedule. This means that i haven't had a chance to test this integration, which is basically the reason they asked me to come here. I hope that they are finished on time today, so we can actually test this. Yesterday i worked at the southdale hospital, and today we are going to the University of Minnesota. Robert will fly back home today, but yesterday Matthew flew in. Matthew works for MeVis, the company that took over my company. He works for the support department of this company and will probably be the main support contact for these two sites in Minneapolis. So today I have to make him a bit more familliar with our software.

Op dinsdag heeft het bijna de hele dag geregend. Voor iemand uit nederland moet dat niet zo'n probleem zijn, zou je zeggen. Maar als het daarbij ook nog eens hard waait en maar 4 graden is, dan word het al wat minder comfertabel. En zeker als je weet dat het in Nederland 15 graden is en Lente. Vannacht ( het is nu half 7 in de ochtend) heeft het gesneeuwd. Overal ligt een mooi laagje van 5 centimeter sneeuw. De bewoners van Minneapolis vinden dat heel weinig. De winter duurt hier van begin November to begin April. Tijdens die periode zijn er dus verkeers opstoppingen door het weer. Tussen April en November moeten alle wegen gerepareerd worden, alle wegen zitten vol met gaten en kuilen. En dan hebben ze weer last van verkeers opstoppingen, maar nu door alle werkzaamheden. En dan zijn alle wegen al 3 of 4 baans. Die auto's hier zijn gewoon veel te groot

. Ondanks het weer geniet ik wel van de nieuwe indrukken en ook van mijn werk.

Dinsdag avond heb ik wel de kans gezien om iets van downtown minneapolis te zien. We zijn gaan eten bij een Mexicaans restaurant. Ik heb nog niet de kans gehad om de Mississippi te bekijken, maar deze ligt vlak bij het hotel. Misschien vandaag of morgen.

MIjn werk gister ging goed, alleen lopen de mensen van TeraRecon, waarmee onze software geintegreerd word in dit project, achter op schema. Dit betekent dat we deze integratie nog niet hebben kunnen testen. Ik hoop dat ze vandaag alles op tijd afhebben. Gister was ik in het Southdale Hospital, vandaag gaan we naar de Universiteit van Minnesota. Robert vliegt vanmiddag weer naar huis, maar gister is Matthew gekomen. Hij is van MeVis, het bedrijf dat mijn bedrijf heeft overgenomen. Hij werkt bij dit bedrijf voor de support afdeling en zal waarschijnlijk alle support voor deze 2 sites in Minneapolis op zich gaan nemen. Dus vandaag moet ik hem een beetje meer vertrouwd maken met onze software.

First day, dag 1

Yesterday I had a good flight. I arrived at 13:20 local time, as planned. The weather was nice, but I was a little bit surprised to see snow outside. A taxi took me to the hotel. My colleague, Robert, made the reservation for the hotel, and because he has like something a gold membership we are treated like VIPs. My hotel room is huge, I have 2 queen size beds to choose from. The room has a nice view on the courtyard, and downtown Minneapolis. I hope i get a chance to see Minneapolis tonight. Today I'll start with work at the university of Minnesota. Besides the work I have to do here, I also have to do my regular work, because my dutch colleague is on a last minute trip to the UK. The weather right now: rain, a lot if rain, and for tomorrow they expect snow. Spring hasn´t started here yet.

Ik heb een goede vlucht gehad gister. Het vliegtuig arriveerde op tijd, het zonnetje scheen. Ik was wel een beetje verbaast om sneeuw te zien liggen buiten. Een taxi heeft me naar het hotel gebracht. Mijn collega, Robert, heeft de hotel reservering gemaakt en omdat hij een gouden lidmaatschap of zoiets heeft, worden we behandeld als VIPs. Mijn kamer is heel groot, met 2 queen size bedden. En een mooi uitzicht op de binnenplaats en downtown MinneapolisIk hoop dat ik vanavond de kans krijg om de stad te zien, gister was ik daar te moe voor. Vandaag begint mijn werk hier, en ik moet ook mijn normale werk nog doen, want mij nederlands collega is ook aan het reizen voor het werk. Lekker druk dus. Het weer nu: regen, heel veel regen. En morgen verwachten ze sneeuw. De lente is hier nog niet begonnen.

Schiphol

At 7.15 am this morning i arrived at schiphol airport. First thing: check in my bag. It was quiet a hassle last night to make sure everything would fit in my bag, and an even bigger hassle to make sure it wasn't to heavy. The struggle payed of: exactly 23 kg

. Next thing: passport control, which means waiting in line. And the next thing when flying intercontinental: security check, which again means waiting. And after that you can wait again till they let you board the plain. But what is another 30 minutes waiting if you have to fly for 9 hours?? Atleast it gives me time to write this story.

So now I'm really on my way for my big adventures in the US en Canada.

Om 7.15 vanochtend kwam ik aan op schiphol. Eerst mijn koffer inchecken. Gelukkig precies 23 kg

, was nog best een gevecht om te zorgen dat hij niet te zwaar was. En daarna de paspoort controle, dus wachten. Eenmaal bij de gate de security check: weer wachten. En daarna, weer wachten tot je aan boord mag. Maar ach, wat is nou nog een half uurtje wachten als je 9 uur moet vliegen. En het geeft me de tijd om deze blog te schrijven.

Dus nu is mijn grote avontuur officieel begonnen.
