On Monday Hannah and I got up at 5 in the morning to go to New York City. We drove for 1.5 hours to a train station, and from there took the train to New York Penn station. Followed by a metro to Battery Park to see the Statue of Liberty. Because even from there it was very hard to see we took the ferry to Staten Island, and back. There were too many people waiting in line to take the boat tour to the statue directly so we decided to take this second option. The Staten Island ferry passes close by the statue. The only drawback: you had to stand outside on the non sunny side of the ship to make pictures and it was really, really cold. But I got some nice pictures. When we got back to the ferry terminal we walked to Wall Street.We couldn't visit the New York stock exchange.

We also looked at the trinity church, this is a normal size church in between all sky scrapers. Interesting to see that. After this we went to ground zero. This is one big building site, because they are building a memorial park. We also saw the memorial wall which remembers all the killed fire fighters.

Next stop was Times Square. Best way to describe that: Flashing neon lights, loads of traffic, loads of people and even more tourists. We went for lunch at Famous Dave's. From Times Square we walked down to Central Park. It's amazing that as soon as you get into that park you don't hear the traffic noise anymore, just birds whistling. Many people were enjoying the sunshine on a couple of big rocks in the park. From here we walked to the visitor centre, and back to the metro. One more metro ride to Penn station, and back with the train.

I have taken the metro in 3 different American cities now: Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York. Let me write down the major characteristics of each of them.

Washington DC: very clean, very strict, a lot of police, you are not allowed to eat or drink in the stations or in the trains. The stations are very dark, i don't know why. When it became busy the police or security would spread all the people out over the platform so everybody could enter in the train.

Philadelphia: Hannah and I were most of the time the only white persons in the train, the rest was all dark. This was a very interesting experience. This didn't only happen in the ghettos, but also downtown, although downtown there were more white people. It was not clean. But on many stations there were nice mosaics on the walls, made by the city, on other stations it were murals from gangs.

New York: Dark, small, dense, crowded stations, cleaner than Philly, but not nearly as clean as DC. A lot of room to stand and very limited seating. But this standing room is necessary, because the trains are almost always full.

Maandag zijn Hannah en ik om 5 uur opgestaan om naar New York te gaan. Eerst 1,5 uur rijden, en vanaf daar 1 uur met de trein naar New York Penn Station. Vervolgens de Metro naar Battery Park, om het Statue of Liberty te bekijken. Omdat zelfs vanaf daar het moeilijk was om dat te zien zijn hebben de Staten Island Ferry genomen naar Staten Island, en terug. Er stonden teveel mensen te wachten voor de boot toer naar het eiland waar het standbeeld op staat, dus hebben we de Ferry genomen. De ferry komt dichtbij het eiland. Het enige nadeel: foto's moest je buiten maken aan de niet zonnige kant van het schip en het was echt heel erg koud. Maar uiteindelijh heb ik een aantal mooie foto's. Toen we terug ware in in de terminal zijn we naar Wall Street gelopen. We mochten de New York stock exchange niet bezoeken.

We hebben de Trinity kerk bekeken. Dit is een normale kerk, tussen allemaal wolken krabbers. Erg apart om dat zo te zien. Hierna naar Ground Zero, de plek waar het World Trade center stond. Dit is een grote bouw put, want ze zijn hier een gedenk plaats/park aan het bouwen. We hebben de gedenk muur voor alle brandweer lieden die omgekomen zijn bij het instorten van de torens bekeken.

Daarna door naar Times Square. De beste manier om dat te beschrijven: Knipperende neon lichten, heel veel verkeer, veel mensen en nog meer toeristen. We zijn gaan lunchen bij Famous Dave’s. Van Times Square zijn we door glopen naar Central Park. Het is verbazing wekkend dat zodra je in het park bent je het verkeer niet meer hoort, alleen maar fluitende volgels. Veel mensen zaten op grote stenen van de zon te genieten. We zijn doorgelopen naar het bezoekers centrum en daarna door naar de metro om weer terug te gaan naar het train station en naar huis.

Ik heb in 3 verschillende amerikaanse steden de metro genomen: Washington DC, Philadelphia en New York City. Hier de belankrijkste karaterstieken.

Washington DC: Erg schoon, heel strikt, veel politie, je mag nergens eten en drinken, niet in de stations of in de treinen. De stations waren erg donker, ik weet niet precies waarom. Toen het drukker werd zorgde de politie/beveiliging ervoor dat iedereen over het perron verdeelt werd zodat iedereen mee kon met de trein.

Philadephia: Hannah en ik waren vaak de enige blanken in de een treinstel, de rest was allemaal donker. Het is heel apart om dit mee te maken. Dit gebeurde niet alleen in de gettos, maar ook downtown, al waren daar meer blanken en toeristen. Het was helemaal niet schoon. Op veel stations waren mosaiken op de muren, gemaakt door de stad toen ze de stations bouwde. Op vele andere was het graffiti van bendes.

New York: Donkere, kleine, drukke, volle stations, schoner dan Philly, maar lang niet zo schoon als DC. In de treinen is maar beperkte ruimte om te zitten, en veel ruimte om te staan. Maar dit is ook nodig want de treinen zitten bijna altijd vol.
